Understanding Outpatient Oncology Infusion Care

Outpatient infusion care involves administering specialized cancer medications under clinical supervision according to the treatment plan developed by your oncologist. During oncology infusion treatment, your visit will vary based on the medication prescribed, the infusion protocol, and your individual care needs.

  • Chemotherapy: Targets rapidly dividing cancer cells.
  • Immunotherapy: Treatments such as checkpoint inhibitors like Keytruda help your immune system recognize and destroy cancer cells.
  • Targeted Therapy: Uses monoclonal antibodies and other therapies designed to target specific proteins involved in tumor growth.

Because each therapy works differently, visit length, pre-medications, and possible side effects vary based on your treatment plan. To support safe, coordinated care, TwelveStone’s clinical team works directly with your referring oncology team to coordinate treatment orders, schedule infusions, and share important updates throughout your care.

If you are looking for infusion services for a non-oncology condition, explore the other conditions we treat at our regional infusion centers.

What to Expect at Your infusion Appointment

Access

Your nurse prepares your IV or implanted port and administers any prescribed pre-medications before treatment begins.

Infusion

Nurses monitor you throughout your treatment while following established clinical protocols. Medications and emergency response procedures are available if side effects occur during your visit.

Discharge

Our team reviews your recovery instructions and helps coordinate your next appointment.

After your visit, we send treatment updates and clinical notes to your referring oncologist to help maintain continuity of care. If you are ready to transfer your infusion treatment to TwelveStone, our team can help coordinate the process.

Navigating Insurance and Financial Assistance

Insurance requirements can sometimes delay the start of oncology infusion treatment. Common steps include benefits verification, prior authorizations, step therapy requirements, and specialty medication coordination. TwelveStone’s financial counselors work directly with your insurance provider to help simplify the process and keep your treatment moving forward.

Depending on your insurance coverage, our specialists can help identify financial assistance programs that may reduce your out-of-pocket costs

  • Commercial Insurance: Eligible patients may qualify for manufacturer copay cards to help reduce medication costs.
  • Government Programs: Patients with Medicare or Medicaid may qualify for financial assistance through independent charitable organizations such as the PAN Foundation, HealthWell Foundation, or CancerCare.

Some insurance plans include copay accumulator or maximizer policies that affect how financial assistance is applied to your deductible. Our financial counselors review your benefits with you and explain how these policies may affect your coverage.

Your Guide to a Comfortable Infusion Experience

Our clinical team works to make each infusion visit as comfortable as possible. To help you prepare for oncology infusion treatment, TwelveStone offers private suites with comfortable recliners, Wi-Fi, television, and complimentary refreshments.

To help make your visit more comfortable, we recommend bringing:

  • Comfortable clothing that provides easy access to your port, such as button-down shirts or zip-up jackets.
  • A long phone charger, your favorite snacks (if approved by your care team), and a notebook for questions.
  • A light sweater or extra layers to stay comfortable if the room feels cool.

Caregivers should be prepared for visits that may last four to eight hours, depending on the prescribed treatment. Bringing personal devices, reading materials, or lunch can help make the time more comfortable while providing quiet support for your loved one.

If appropriate for your treatment plan, ask your nurse about supportive options such as scalp cooling or limb cryotherapy. Chaplain services and prayer support are also available upon request for patients who would like spiritual support during treatment.
