Children with complex medical needs sometimes require IV medications that oral treatments cannot effectively deliver. TwelveStone Health Partners provides clinically monitored pediatric infusion therapy across more than 30 outpatient centers throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, Georgia, Mississippi, and Virginia, helping families access specialized care closer to home.

Every visit takes place in a private infusion suite designed for comfort, with recliners, Wi-Fi, and refreshments available during treatment. Our experienced infusion nurses closely monitor your child throughout the entire appointment to support both safety and comfort.

Why Patients Choose TwelveStone for Infusion Therapy

Understanding Pediatric Infusion Therapy

Infusion therapy delivers medications directly into the bloodstream through an IV or other approved access device. Pediatric infusions may be recommended when oral medications are no longer effective, are difficult to tolerate, or cannot adequately manage a child’s condition. Every treatment plan is coordinated closely with your child’s prescribing specialist to ensure safe and appropriate care.

Our clinical team supports children receiving infusion therapies for conditions such as:

  • Autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, including Crohn’s disease and juvenile arthritis
  • Neuromuscular and neurologic disorders that require biologic therapies
  • Immune support therapies, including immunoglobulin replacement and primary immunodeficiency treatment
  • Serious infections requiring intravenous antibiotic therapy

TwelveStone administers more than 62 medications across our regional infusion center locations to help families manage complex chronic conditions closer to home. All medications are prescribed based on your child’s diagnosis, treatment plan, and physician recommendations.

What to Expect During Your Child’s Infusion Visit

Knowing what to expect can help children and caregivers feel more comfortable before treatment day. At TwelveStone, pediatric infusion appointments follow a clear step-by-step process designed to support safety, comfort, and communication throughout the visit.

Before the Visit

Our clinical team reviews all pre-infusion instructions before your appointment. We may recommend increasing water intake the day before treatment to support hydration and simplify vein access. Families are encouraged to bring a favorite comfort item and dress children in loose, comfortable clothing.

During the Treatment

After reviewing vitals, medications, and allergies, nurses prepare the IV access site. Depending on your child’s care plan, treatment may be administered through a peripheral IV, PICC line, central line, or implanted port.

Medications are delivered through specialized infusion pumps while nurses continuously monitor your child throughout the session.

After the Session

Once treatment is complete, nurses remove the IV or secure the access line before a brief observation period. Families receive home care instructions before discharge, and our patient resources page includes additional information to help you prepare for future visits.

Clinical Safety and Monitoring Standards

Safe pediatric infusion therapy depends on consistent monitoring, clear clinical protocols, and experienced nursing oversight. Our care teams follow established outpatient infusion safety procedures throughout every stage of treatment.

Our outpatient infusion safety process includes:

  • Screening for recent illnesses, allergies, and medication changes before treatment
  • Baseline vitals and ongoing nurse monitoring during infusions
  • Controlled medication administration using specialized infusion pumps

Because every medication carries different risks and monitoring requirements, our nursing team coordinates closely with your child’s prescribing specialist throughout treatment.

Each care plan also includes PharmD-led oversight. Pharmacists review pediatric dosing, evaluate medication compatibility, and support sterile medication preparation within our specialty pharmacy workflow.

Navigating Insurance and Cost for Pediatric Infusions

Many pediatric infusion medications require insurance approval and benefits verification before treatment begins. Our intake specialists manage this process directly with families, providers, and insurance carriers to help reduce delays in care.

Our Authorization Process

Our team verifies commercial insurance, TennCare, and other eligible provider benefits before treatment begins. We coordinate directly with your child’s physician to collect clinical documentation, submit prior authorizations, and track approvals.

Before scheduling treatment, we explain expected out-of-pocket costs and answer questions about insurance coverage or financial responsibilities.

Financial Assistance and Home Care

When available, we help families explore manufacturer copay programs and nonprofit financial assistance resources. In some cases, home infusion may also be evaluated as a clinically appropriate treatment option for your child.

Pediatric Infusion Therapy FAQs

Appointment times vary based on the medication, dosage, and your child’s treatment plan. Most pediatric infusion visits last between one and four hours, including check-in, medication preparation, treatment administration, and post-treatment observation.

Yes. Pediatric infusion therapy requires a prescription and referral from your child’s prescribing specialist. Once received, our team coordinates directly with the provider’s office to gather documentation and secure insurance approvals before treatment begins.

Bring favorite comfort items, a stuffed animal, blanket, or quiet entertainment like a tablet or books. Pack preferred snacks and drinks if your child’s treatment protocol allows. A current list of all home medications and any questions for the nursing staff helps the visit run smoothly.

A peripheral IV is a temporary IV placed in the hand or arm for a single treatment visit. A port or PICC line provides longer-term access for patients who require ongoing infusions and helps reduce repeated needle sticks over time.

Your clinical team will explain which option is most appropriate for your child’s treatment plan.

Yes. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to remain with their child throughout the infusion appointment. Family presence can help children feel more comfortable and supported during treatment, and our private suites are designed to accommodate caregivers during the visit.

Most commercial insurance plans and state healthcare programs provide coverage for pediatric infusion therapy, although benefits vary by policy. Our team completes benefits verification and prior authorization before treatment begins and can help families explore copay assistance options when available.
